The Center for Adherence Support Evaluation
at the New York Academy of Medicine
Panel Submission Overview Document for 129th Annual Meeting
of the American Public Health Association
Statement:
The promises of new leases on life and hope offered by highly active antiretroviral
therapy (HAART) have been tempered by the difficulties of use. People
living with HIV are faced with how to deal with the constraints imposed
by HAART-the multiple drug regimen, frequency and timing of doses, dietary
requirements, and medication storage. Added to the difficulties of medication-taking
behavior are the challenges of helping individuals most in need of adherence
support. Many people living with HIV face adversities related to poverty,
substance use, and mental illness that may make it more difficult to adhere
and require a constellation of concrete support services-drug treatment,
housing, child care-to manage their HIV disease. A national evaluation
of 12 adherence support interventions nationwide sponsored by the Health
Resources and Services Administration, Special Projects of National Significance,
is currently underway. This panel presentation will address the array
of implementation and evaluation issues associated with Highly Active
Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Support Interventions.
